An isolator, also known as a unidirectional device, is a device for unidirectional transmission of electromagnetic waves. It is a non reciprocal dual port microwave ferrite device. When electromagnetic waves are transmitted in the forward direction, all power can be fed back to the load, causing significant attenuation of reflected waves from the load. This unidirectional transmission characteristic can be used to isolate the impact of load changes on the signal source.

The main requirements for the performance of isolation devices are: small forward attenuation, large reverse isolation, low voltage standing wave ratio, a certain frequency band width, in addition to specifying the withstand power and operating temperature.

Pasternack RF isolators are passive 2-port microwave devices used to help protect RF components from overcurrent or signal reflection. A radio frequency isolator can be used as a unidirectional collector to isolate the source and load, thereby capturing or dissipating any energy reflected onto the load. The isolator is made of ferrite materials and magnetic materials that control the direction of signal flow. These RF isolators have a minimum isolation degree between 16dB and 20dB.

The Pasternack's 50 ohm RF isolator only comes with SMA and N-type connectors. The rated frequency range of broadband RF isolators ranges from 1 to 26.5GHz, depending on the product type and model, and the insertion loss is minimal. The power of the isolator is 20 watts, and the maximum voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is 1.45:1, both of which comply with RoHS and REACH specifications.
