There are various types of RF connectors designed to meet the needs of different frequencies and physical structures. Each type of connector must comply with the corresponding connector standards.

The frequency range of coaxial connectors is limited by the first-order circular waveguide mode. Reducing the inner radius of the outer conductor can correspondingly increase the application frequency range. By adding dielectric materials, the operating frequency can be reduced, while also increasing joint losses. The performance of the joint is greatly affected by the quality of the contact surface connection. If there is a slight deviation between the radius of the inner and outer conductors and the design value, it will lead to the separation of the connection nodes, thereby increasing the port reflection coefficient and causing significant transmission losses. Therefore, the precision of joint processing will increase with the frequency of application.

This article will focus on introducing SMA connectors, which are widely used in RF circuit design. Typical SMA connectors support frequencies of DC-18GHz, but some with higher accuracy can achieve 26.5GHz.

In fact, SMA and 3.5mm (Up to 34GHz), 2.92mm (also known as K-type joint, Up to 40GHz), 3.5mm and 2.92mm refer to the inner diameter of coaxial outer conductors. SMA type connectors have foam beads, while 3.5mm and 2.92mm connectors use air interfaces. In terms of mechanical structure, these three types of joints are compatible, which means that they can be directly connected to each other. However, due to the better mechanical tolerances, stability, temperature performance, SWR, repeatability, loss, and coating of joints that support higher frequencies, different standard joints may cause damage to higher-level joints when connected to each other. Therefore, frequent connections of different types of joints should be avoided.
