  Disadvantages of fixed wireless access

  (1) Insufficient technology: Taking the United States as an example, Teligent, one of the largest fixed wireless operators in the country, obtained a license to operate in the 24GHz frequency band in the early 1990s. At that time, it agreed with some device manufacturers' views on the development of LMDS, believing that it could transform LMDS military technology and be cost-effective. However, the reality is that LMDS technology development is much slower than expected.

  (2) Inconsistent allocation of frequency bands: Currently, many countries are trying to vigorously promote the development of fixed wireless services, but it is difficult to form consistent standards when allocating frequency bands. In Europe, some countries have chosen 35GHz and 26GHz, while others have chosen 105GHz and 40GHz. In the United States, LMDS is developed in frequency bands such as 24GHz, 28GHz, 38GHz, and 39GHz. At the 26GHz frequency band, wireless signals are transmitted directly, which is very suitable for densely populated metropolitan areas. However, in suburban areas, the usage effect is particularly poor, especially when network services are overloaded. But if Spain chooses the 3GHz frequency band, in densely populated Madrid, they feel that the capacity is insufficient. Therefore, the non-uniform selection of frequency bands not only leads to a lack of standards for the development of fixed wireless services, but also further exacerbates the difficulty of further improving related technologies.

  (3) Cost barrier: Some analysts point out that the high cost of fixed wireless base station equipment may deter many small and medium-sized telecommunications companies from paying attention. At present, the cost of each low-frequency band such as 35GHz base station equipment is $1000, and if it is a 26GHz frequency band base station equipment, the cost will increase to $5000. In this situation, if the cost cannot be reduced, it will take at least 7-8 years to consider achieving economies of scale in operating broadband wireless services.

  (4) The insufficient recognition of users directly leads to insufficient market demand: from the analysis of market status and development, the demand for fixed wireless is not as high as DSL, mainly due to the lack of understanding and awareness of fixed wireless access technology among end users. European broadband operator Formus said, "If users do not understand it, of course they will not purchase it. In this way, if the market demand continues to be insufficient, manufacturers will not be able to produce related equipment on a large scale, and the cost of related equipment will remain high, unable to form a virtuous cycle.
